Requirements for Admission

1) Admission into the university and the program for Classics is ultimately determined and granted according to the rules established by the Graduate School of the University of Florida (see the Graduate Catalog).

2) Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. The Graduate School requires a minimum score of 1000 (combined verbal and quantitative). Competitive applicants for funding awards from the department should typically have a combined score of at least 1200.

To the Master’s programs (Level I):

a) Twenty hours in one language and fifteen hours in the other language for admission to the curriculum of Classics. Twenty hours in Greek or Latin for admission to the curriculum in that language.|
b) At least six hours in one or more of the following: ancient history, ancient art, archaeology, philosophy, literary criticism, linguistics.
c) A GPA of at least a 3.0.
d) Deficiencies that can be corrected within one year will not necessarily prevent admission, if the record shows promise on other grounds.

To the Ph.D. program (Level II):

a) M.A. in Classics or the equivalent.
b) A GPA of at least 3.25 in previous graduate work, and an undergraduate average as in c) 3 above.
c) Demonstrated reading knowledge of German, French, Italian or Modern Greek (competency in the second language to be demonstrated before the completion of the second year at Level II).
d) Deficiencies that can be corrected within one year will not necessarily prevent admission, if the applicant’s record gives evidence of the capacity to undertake and complete guided independent reading and research at the doctoral level.
