NEW ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
  - All prospective Ph.D. students for 2008 must complete a on-campus visit during the week of March 17-21, 2008.  An entrance exam, consisting of Latin sight translation, will be administered at this time. Meetings with Classics faculty will also be arranged during this visit.
  - In addition to the materials listed below, a substantial writing sample is required.  This will be a research paper or presentation; the personal statement cannot serve as the writing sample for Ph.D. applicants.
  - The deadline for the receipt of all application materials is March 28, 2008.
- Admitted students will be required to attend the Summer Latin Institute at the University of Florida, for 1 1/2 weeks in mid-July.  There will be an orientation for new students, in addition to the course offered.

Applying to the Distance PhD Program in Classics Requirements & Prerequisites.

Two prerequisites are required: a graduate degree (M.A., M.S., M.Div. vel sim.) and an ability to read Latin. It is not required that your graduate degree be in Latin or Classics, but it is essential that you have the ability to read Latin authors in the original. If you need to review Latin before beginning doctoral level work, one can explore local options. If local options are not available, the University of Georgia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill both offer excellent correspondence courses in beginning and intermediate Latin. LatinTeach also keeps a list of distance programs in Latin.

In order to apply, you will need to supply transcripts, three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and application forms (if you hold an MA, you do NOT need to submit GRE scores). And, you will need to supply much of this information TWICE, once to Graduate Admissions, and once to the department. Why? It is better not to question bureaucracy; rather, simply supply the offerings the filing gods crave by their fixed feast deadlines, and you will prosper!
