Memorial Service in Honor of Professor David Young

We announce with sadness the passing of Professor David Young, a great Philhellene, author of several important books on Pindar, the history of the Olympic games, and the revival of the Modern Olympics. He has been honored by the President of the Hellenic Republic, the International Olympic Committee and many prestigious organizations around the world.

A memorial service will be held in his honor. Keep watching this space for an announcement in the very near future.

CGS Honors Nick Kontaridis

The Center for Greek Studies at the University of Florida honored Nick Kontaridis for 17 years of loyal service to the Center and the University. Former students and colleagues gathered to pay tribute to a great teacher and rolemodel.

New Major in Greek Studies

The Center for Greek Studies at the University of Florida is proud to announce that it has recently established a Major in Modern Greek Studies. This Major track will allow the many students who were already pursuing a Minor in Modern Greek to obtain Major credit by taking additional courses from a wide variety of offerings. This exciting development—the lifelong dream of our faculty—was realized in the same year in which the Center for Greek Studies celebrates its 30th anniversary!

Distinguished Public Service Award for Gus Bilirakis

On October 7, 2011, the Center for Greek Studies bestowed a Distinguished Public Service Award on Congressman Gus Bilirakis. The Center congratulates Mr. Bilirakis on his many accomplishments in public service as a former elected member of the Florida State Legislature and now a duly elected member of the United States Congress. Mr. Bilirakis is also an alumnus of the University of Florida, a former student of Greek Studies, and a former President of the university’s Greek-American Student Association.

Congratulations to Dr. Andrew Nichols

The book of Dr. Andrew Nichols Ctesias, On India has recently been published in the U.K. by the prestigious Bristol Academic Press. The book is the first book ever to be published by a UF Ph.D. graduate. The work is based on the author's doctoral thesis completed under the supervision of CGS Director Kostas Kapparis.

The Center for Greek Studies honors Karelisa Hartigan with a new lecture series:

The Karelisa Hartigan lecture series is envisaged to be an outreatch event, with guest lecturers speaking in local alumni associations and Greek-American groups. The first lecture, by Allison Glazebrook (Brock University), on Paideia and the Attic Hetairai, was given in Gainesville on January 21. The next lecture is scheduled for the academic year 2011/2.
