What is the Certificate of Attainment in Greek?

The University of Florida has been recently recognised as one of three Testing Centers in the United States entitled to administer the formal examinations for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek. The Certificate is awarded by the Greek Language Center (KEG), which operates under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Education.

This certification was developed in accordance with the guidelines of the Council of Europe, and is similar to existing certifications for other languages, such as the Lower/Proficiency Certificates for English, or the Grundstuffe/Mittelstuffe/Oberstuffe certification for German.

The purpose of it is to prove to any interested party that someone has been tested in a formal setting and in accordance with objectively quantifiable criteria, and has been found proficient in the Greek language in one of the 4 levels of attainment for which Certificates are awarded:

At Level A the candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate basic information and write short simple texts

At Level B the candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate efficiently in a limited variety of situations, express personal views in a simple manner, and compose short texts.

At Level C the candidate must demonstrate the ability to participate efficiently in friendly and formal conversation, explicitly and accurately express personal opinions, and provide detailed information on topics.

At Level D the candidates must demonstrate the ability to efficiently express their views, and communicate with a high degree of fluency and accuracy in a wide range of subjects.
